The Lewis County Traffic Safety Task Force is coordinated by Amy Yanez of Lewis County. The task force collaborates with local volunteers,
organizations and law enforcement to help promote safe driving and pedestrian
safety as well as educate citizens on major traffic driving issues.
Traffic Safety Projects and Programs:
Safety City:
Safety City is a pedestrian and school bus safety program for
young children sponsored by the Department of Social Services. A model
city is set up and the children are shown videos on pedestrian and school
bus safety. The children are then escorted through the model city by
a volunteer who instructs them in the many aspects of pedestrian and
school bus safety. Signs, street names, traffic lights, crosswalks,
railroad crossings, and identifying fire and police departments are
covered. The volunteers who work with the youngsters are police officers
from City, County, and State law enforcement agencies within Lewis County.
The Lewis County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post and Support Volunteers
not only work with the children, but help to set up and dismantle Safety
City. The school bus safety part of the program is staffed by bus drivers
and transportation supervisors from county schools.
Bicycle Rodeo:
The Bicycle Rodeo is a community event sponsored by the Department
of Social Services. Several bicycle rodeo events are held throughout
the county each year. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office, as well as
other law enforcement agencies, take part in conducting these events.
The program is an interactive experience for young bicycle riders, who
are taught bicycle safety. Traffic flow, signs, courtesy, rules of the
road, safety, and helmets are demonstrated to young riders in exercises
conducted by officers.
