Police Traffic Services

Overview

The goal of the Police Traffic Services (PTS) Program at WTSC is to save lives, prevent injuries and reduce property damage in motor vehicle collisions by actively promoting and supporting law enforcement activities.

Those activities include training, technical assistance, and funding for specialized equipment to the nearly 300 local, county, tribal, state and federal (to include military) law enforcement agencies throughout Washington State.

Issues

In Washington State, over 6,400 people have been killed in traffic crashes in the last ten years (1996 - 2005).

There have been tens of thousands of injuries and multiple billions of dollars lost in property damage, lost wages and medical costs. By contrast, the losses incurred as the result of traffic crashes far exceed all types of crime or criminal activity.

Losses as the result of traffic crashes are attributable to several key issues. Those issues are impaired drivers, excessive speed and lack of seat belt use. In the last eight years, nearly 40% of fatal crashes involved an impaired driver and 45% of people killed had not used safety restraints, even though  average seat belt use for the general population of Washington State is 96.3%, the highest in the nation.

Traffic law enforcement has been a primary mission of most enforcement agencies for many years. Most agencies elicit public cooperation and adherence to traffic laws through warnings, citations, fines, and in serious circumstances, arrest.

WTSC assists law enforcement agencies throughout the state by providing access to funding for traffic enforcement for equipment, training and hourly reimbursement for selected enforcement activities.
