Seat Belts & Occupant Protection
Wearing a seat belt decreases the chance of dying or being seriously injured in a collision by about 70 percent.
Our Occupant Protection program encourages seat belt use and helps parents keep children safe in cars.
Program Objectives
Increase & enforce seat belt use
Our Click It or Ticket campaign helped raise Washington’s daytime seat belt use to 96 percent — well above the national average. Now we’re focusing on increasing seat belt use at night and among high-risk drivers.
Educate adults about child passenger safety
Many parents find child passenger safety laws confusing. We fund projects to educate parents and protect children. We also provide funding for law enforcement projects that aim to increase seat belt use.
