Annual Grants for Traffic Safety

We award large grants on an annual cycle, focusing on projects that address one or more of the top Target Zero priorities. The next application period will be open beginning in March, 2013. Review the previous Request for Proposals FFY 2013 (docx 127.32 KB) for projects to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Who qualifies for an annual grant?

  • Washington state agencies
  • Federally recognized tribal governments
  • Washington cities, counties, and their sub-agencies
  • Non-profit organizations with existing IRS 501c(3) status
  • Washington public schools (and private schools with nonprofit status)

How much money is available?

Annual grants can be from $1,000 to $50,000. Larger grants may be available for regional or statewide projects. (We also have mini grants that can be applied for at any time.)

What’s typically funded?

You can use grant funds to pay for:

  • Implementation of traffic safety strategies
  • Public education campaigns
  • Equipment and materials
  • Training and travel related to project goals

You cannot use grant funds for office furniture, routine road construction or maintenance, projects required by statute, or to replace existing state or local funding. The Request for Proposals FFY 2013 (docx 127.32 KB) has details on what is and isn’t allowed.

Improve your chances of getting an annual grant

You are most likely to get funding for a project that makes use of Target Zero: The Plan (pdf 5 mb) proven strategies. Strategies for addressing a traffic safety problem can be

  • proven to help
  • likely to help
  • unknown if they will help
  • etc.

Review strategies and resources for the particular traffic safety problem you propose to address.

Nearly every project we fund attempts to address Target Zero priorities 1 or 2, and only priorities that change driver and occupant behavior. Here are a few examples:

  • Impaired driving
  • Speeding
  • Young drivers
  • Unrestrained drivers and passengers
  • Distracted driving

Additionally, let us know if your project receives matching funds. If another agency or organization is partially funding your project, your grant request will receive special consideration.

Deadlines

  • March – We issue a request for proposals (RFP).
  • May – Your proposal will be due in early May.
  • July – We announce who will receive grants.

If you receive a grant, your project must be conducted between Oct. 1 of the year the grant is made and Sept. 30 of the following year.

How to apply

The next grant application period will be open beginning in March, 2013. View the previous Request for Proposals FFY 2013 (docx 127.32 KB) to review the steps for submitting a proposal.
